Project 1.. Digital
Project 1:
- You are to produce an 11x17 in., 2-page spread feature article on a hobby.
- The focus here is on the visual and semantic hierarchy that leads the viewer's eye through the spread. It should include a minimum of three images, and appropriate use of columns, typography, margins, gutters, "pull-quotes"...
Tell us about what you did, why you did it, and what you learned.
For this project I created an 11×17 two-page magazine spread about my favorite hobby, photography. I wrote about how photography became important in my life and how it started when my first daughter was born. I wanted the article to tell a personal story about how photography allows me to capture memories of my family and preserve moments that would otherwise pass quickly. The layout includes a large headline, section titles, pull quotes, and multiple photographs that support the story visually.
When designing the spread, I focused on creating a clear visual hierarchy so that the reader’s eye naturally moves through the page. I placed the main title at the top so it immediately grabs attention. I used section headings such as “Discovering Photography” and “My Family as Inspiration” to organize the story into smaller parts that are easier to read. I also included pull quotes like “Photography allows me to capture the small moments that make life meaningful,” which highlight the emotional message of the article. Images of my children and family were included because they represent the real moments that inspired my love for photography.
I chose this topic because photography is something that is deeply connected to my life as a mother. Taking pictures of my children allows me to capture their growth and create memories that we can look back on in the future. In my article I explain how my daughter now enjoys looking at the photos from when she was a baby and how my son has also become part of these memories. For me, photography is not just a hobby but a way to document the story of my family.
Through this project I learned how important layout and visual organization are in editorial design. I learned how elements like headlines, images, columns, and pull quotes work together to guide the reader through the page. I also learned how combining personal storytelling with visual design can create a stronger emotional connection with the audience. This assignment helped me understand how design and photography can work together to communicate ideas and preserve meaningful moments.
