Blog Post 1 design


I've been learning about postcard design, and it’s teaching me a lot about the balance between creativity, clarity, and communication.  There’s no room for excess every color, typeface, and image has to earn its place. Here’s what I’m learning:

Simplicity is powerful: The limited canvas forces you to focus on the essential message.

Visual hierarchy matters: A good postcard grabs attention from distance. The hierarchy of imagery, color, and text leads viewers from curiosity to connection.

Every design tells a story: a postcard is storytelling in its simplest form an intersection of art, emotion, and communication.

Designing postcards has reminded me that constraints can spark creativity. Sometimes, less truly is more and that’s a beautiful design lesson to carry into any project.

    Well said, I sometimes start adding way too many shaders or effects to my designs to where it takes away from the original beauty of it. Less truly is more.

  Project 1:  You are to produce an 11x17 in., 2-page spread feature article on a hobby. The focus here is on the visual and semantic hierarchy that leads the viewer's eye through the spread. It should include a minimum of three images, and appropriate use of columns, typography, margins, gutters, "pull-quotes"... Tell us about what you did, why you did it, and what you learned. For this project I created an 11×17 two-page magazine spread about my favorite hobby, photography. I wrote about how photography became important in my life and how it started when my first daughter was born. I wanted the article to tell a personal story about how photography allows me to capture memories of my family and preserve moments that would otherwise pass quickly. The layout includes a large headline, section titles, pull quotes, and multiple photographs that support the story visually.
